ROTARY CARES: 2014

Today,on the 11th of October,we celebrate the official handover of therevitalization and renovation of Wikrama Putra.

In the past years the foundation Kansarme Kinderen, the Rotary Club Semarang Bojong and the Rotary Club Hilversum – West, with our sadly deceased and dearly missed Rotaryfriends Didi Dharmani and Frans van den Brink, we were able to manage local and international fundraising for Wikrama Putra.

Several projects were honored with Matching Grants from the Rotary Foundation. The kitchen renovation, a new baby building and other projects were succesfully completed.

Three years ago the joint cooperation of Rotary Club Semarang Bojong and our foundation Kansarme Kinderen in Indonesië were able to find funds to renew all roofing. However we decided that there was more to do!

The project for therevitalization and renovation of the buildings of Wikrama Putra was on our to do list for a long time. Both Rotary Semarang Bojong and the foundation Kansarme Kinderen were not happy with the poor maintenance of the structures.

The three Rotary Clubs in Hilversum in The Netherlands, Rotary Hilversum, Rotary Hilversum 3 and Rotary Hilversum – West, organize every year a combined event called Heel Hilversum Helpt. The last three years the results of the fundraising was donated to the organization of World Parents for projects in South America. The HHH committee decided to look for another project for the upcoming event in 2014. This was the moment where our foundation took the initiative to propose our Wikrama Putra renovation project to the HHH organization. It was also the edition were Rotary Hilversum – West had to take the lead. And we were very motivated to make a sound and successful event.

Rotary Semarang Bojong was asked to make a proposal for the renovation with a budget. This meant that members of Rotary Semarang Bojong together with contractors drafted a budget for the required renovations. A lot of work and communication with our Board.

Whit this budget, the pictures of the buildings and the situation where the children had to live in we were able to make banners and other promotion material for our upcoming event.

The Heel Hilversum Helpt event in June 2014 was a success and the next morning I forwarded an email to Pak Hananta with the words: Bingo! Let’s start to work!

Since than and after the Ramadhan a lot of work have been done by the contractor but also by the members of Rotary Semarang Bojong who put in hundreds of hours in supervising the proceedings, the communications with The Netherlands, the communication with director Pak Untung and with the staff of Wikrama Putra.

Underway is a program for an additional education program with new audio visual equipment, also ment for the entertainment of the children. Rotarian Stefanus Setiawan will setup this program, together with drs. Inge Hummel, our educationist and Boardmember, and Pak Wi from Wikrama Putra. The principal idea of Stefanus is that children in an orphanage get used to receive food and other things, which gives an wrong understanding to the kids. This should be changed. It is important to change the mindset of the children and that they learn that have their own personality and learn not just waiting for help. With the teaching of this additional program the children of Wikrama Putra will get a better outlook for their future. In fact this additional education program is even more important than the renovation itself.

Of course we are very glad with the results of this renovation andit is about time that we perform the official ‘handover’.
